'Ephraim in the Philippines'
  >Where I live

I was fortunate enough to find an apartment right across the street from campus. There are "house boys" that help during the day, and an armed security guard at night. I am on the top floor. On the ground floor, there is an Irish Coffee House (amazing what kind of latitude you give yourself for adding a little Baileys to a drink, huh?), small restaurant, and an internet cafe.

The neighborhood is growing rapidly, with at least 4 other apartment buildings being constructed on my street alone. The reason is because there is space here. The bad part is due to the same space, there are "squatters" here. That is the Filipino equivalent to a homeless person. Now, being poor isn't a crime, but crime does grow deep roots in poverty. The building is terrifically secure, with only the guard and house boys having keys to the main gate. The apartments have bars on the windows, and 4 heavy-duty bolt locks on the main door. The gate to campus also has armed police officers there 24 hours a day, and is a mere 40 yards away. Once on the campus (itself protected by a large concrete fence and roving armed police patrols) I am safely back in the embrace of academia.

Enough of that. Pictures. I know that is why you came to this page. Click here to see them.
